THE ROLL TACK     This maneuver is used to turn the boat through the wind with slight use of the rudder. Any movement of the rudder causes drag and slows the boat when deflected for turning. When through the wind the boat is accelerated by flattening the hull. Not an easy maneuver, but with a little practice......

Recently on a starboard tack, the boat is turned through the wind with slight rudder deflection. Instead of moving to the new upwind side of  the boat to keep the boat level, remain on the now down wind side and heal it down wind.

The boat turns through the wind and heals down wind, allowing the boom to swing overhead.

The boat is now on a port tack and the crew climbs to the new windward rail to flatten the boat and accelerate forward.

Manuver complete all with minimal use of rudder and good forward speed !
